Ok, wierd question for the Britons on the group.

While watching the snooker this afternoon, and listening to Dominic Dale
commenting, I was struck by something. Dominic's voice, for some reason,
perhaps his accent, sounded familiar to me. In fact, it sounded exsactly
like someone who looks something like Dominic Dale.
Now the odd thing is... I've never heard Dominic Dale commenting before,
so I cannot have remembered his voice. What's more, I have the distinct
impression that the person who owns both this similar voice _and_ this
similar face is a comedian, and a British one.
So. Who on earth am I thinking of? Is it a regional accent, perhaps, and
if so, where from? Most puzzlingly, is the (rather lengthy) faces that
it comes out of also a regional specialty, or is that pure coincidence?

I haven't heard him commentate, but his accent is probably Welsh. It
appears that he was born in England, but moved to Wales at an early
age.

Last year I went fishing with Salvador Dali. He was using a dotted

Well, he's Welsh as can be heard here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/snooker/dominic_dale_int erview.shtml

Could you be thinking of Rob Brydon?

Ah, but I know better than to assume that just because someone's from a
certain place, his accent is also from there. I certainly wouldn't trust
myself to identify a Welsh accent. But it really is Welsh, then? Right.
South Welsh, I presume - I understand that which Welshmen speak the true
Welsh is a question which raises Opinions, so perhaps Welsh accents in
English are similarly diverse.

> Could you be thinking of Rob Brydon?

Yes, I rather think that's the one I was thinking of. He's also Welsh,
so the accent would fit, and he has a similar longish face. The curious
thing is that I don't like his main roles like Keith Barret, but I've
seen him appearing as himself on occasion and then he's much funnier.

So... South Welshmen have equine faces? Not enough data, methinks.

Welsh accents are very diverse. There's a whole lot of difference
between North Welsh and South Welsh accents, particularly.

[Rob Brydon]

Rob Brydon appears as himself, or in different roles, much more often
than he does as Keith Barrett nowadays. He's particularly good in
'Cruise of the Gods'.

Vive La Difference!

Actually, I like the southern accents when its possessor is speaking
English, but not when speaking Welsh. The converse is true for northern
accents.

The southern accents also vary, of course. Swansea is quite a different
creature to P'Talbot a handful of miles away. Cardiff, being Kaaaardiff,
is completely different again.

The southern accents are great for expressing sarcasm or irony, I find.

Like the story of the miner who was putting a new window in the front of
his terraced house.

He'd taken the old window out, and was enlarging the hole ready for the
new one, when a fellow collier came by. He watched his friend hacking
away at the masonry for a minute, before saying:

"What's the matter, Idris? Lost yewr key, 'ave yew?"
